The contours of the energy landscape are radically transforming. Demands for deep decarbonization are growing, countries and companies are setting ambitious net-zero targets, and renewable energy proliferates globally. Even with the increasing role of renewable energy in the global energy space, the geopolitics of energy still matter, and the disruptions are many. The COVID pandemic collapsed oil and gas demand for much of 2020, but it’s already bouncing back in 2021 along with a price recovery. The energy transition and ESG financial pressures may challenge future demand. How are the world’s leading energy companies shifting to align with the low-carbon transition while also meeting the demands for traditional energy sources? This panel explores the energy transition and will discuss how the geopolitics of energy is experiencing a new stage of discontinuity, the impact of stricter climate policies, and new calls for action around environmental justice in the energy transition to cleaner energy exposing both new risks and opportunities for producers and consumers of global energy.
