Mohonk Consultations is offering Farm Fields to Riverfronts – Nature Based Solutions to Climate Change in the Hudson Valley on Wednesday, March 30, at 7 PM. This one-hour webinar is part of Bard College’s worldwide teach-in on climate solutions & justice, which will reach thousands of people through collaboration with universities, schools, and faith-based communities.
The webinar will highlight nature-based initiatives underway in the Hudson Valley to address climate change locally including 1) agricultural practices that can help keep carbon in the ground while revitalizing farm soils and 2) steps that communities can take to address flooding due to increasingly intense rain events and storm surges along the Hudson River. These initiatives are both particularly pertinent to the Hudson Valley, with its valuable agricultural resources and the many communities that have experienced flooding in recent years.
Speakers include:
Heather Eckardt, Manager, Scenic Hudson’s Northeast Carbon Alliance Project, will present an overview of the carbon cycle and share examples of how regenerative agriculture can help mitigate climate change while improving agricultural soils.
Aaron Ristow, Director, American Farmland Trust’s Genesee River Demonstration Farm Network and NYS Rented Lands Conservation Incentives Program, will share examples of regenerative agriculture underway in our region.
Lyndsey Cooper, Climate Outreach Specialist, NYS DEC Hudson River Estuary Program and the Cornell University Water Resources Institute, will describe climate adaptation and resilience programs in Hudson Valley riverfront communities that further New York State’s ambitious climate goals, including a case study of local community climate-adaptive design conceived in partnership with Cornell University’s Department of Landscape Architecture.
Mohonk Consultations is a not-for-profit based at Ulster County’s Mohonk Mountain House, which offers programs to foster a greater awareness of the interrelationship of all life on earth and inspire and nurture the development of sustainable initiatives. Programs include conferences, forums, awards, and publications centered on the Hudson Valley and attuned to global and national perspectives.
