16nov11:30 am12:30 pmThe Building Design Professional’s Guide to NYC Climate Action

Event Details

Join Building Energy Exchange and NYC Accelerator for a workshop on preparing design professionals to meet NYC’s climate action targets and increase client investments in low-carbon buildings.

In the next few years, New York City will become one of the first cities in the world to place limits on the carbon emissions of large buildings and to implement a performance-based energy code. Central elements in the climate action plan of New York City, both this new approach to energy codes (Local Law 32 of 2018) and the regulation of carbon emissions from existing buildings (Local Law 97 of 2019) will require significant changes to design practices across myriad disciplines, especially architects and engineers. This NYCxDESIGN program will provide an overview of these new regulations and a roadmap for taking advantage of this singular opportunity to engage clients and communities in the development of a low-carbon future.

To directly engage with the changes to professional practice that may be required, the Building Energy Exchange last year convened the Architects Advisory Council, which outlined a series of actionable recommendations to catalyze the design and construction of low-carbon buildings, as well as the integration of high-performance building practices in architecture. In turn, the NYC Accelerator works directly with thousands of stakeholders in the design and building industries providing advice and support in the pursuit of buildings that are healthy, comfortable, affordable and climate friendly. Together these organizations are uniquely suited to help working practitioners understand how to comply with NYC’s aggressive climate action targets.

High performance buildings and investment in energy efficiency and electrification are essential to the future of New York City. Architects, engineers and other designers are key players in the effort to meet these new and ambitious requirements and normalize high performance building practices to the broader NYC building industry. Our presenters will provide a foundational understanding of these ground-breaking requirements to help design professionals improve their pitch for high performance building.
