Event Details
The Resilient Solar Initiative, powered by Solar One and funded by National Oceanic and Atmospheric
Administration (NOAA), is a high school internship program in partnership with the City of Newark’s
Office of Sustainability. Its mission is to develop eight mobile solar chargers deployed to city-wide
community hubs for emergency preparedness. These chargers provide supplemental electricity during
emergencies, aiding Newark residents with medical devices and electronics.
To raise awareness of solar power’s importance, the initiative hosts eight Community Engagement
Showcase “pop-up” events. These free events educate Newark students, families, and businesses on
solar power’s role in emergency services. Events feature:
- Educational Activities: Engage with STEM-focused activities and learn about green
energy careers, fostering positive climate action in our community. - Live Demonstrations: Witness training demonstrations and the deployment of a
solar-energy powered emergency battery station, showcasing the practical
applications of sustainable technology. - Cultural Elements: Enjoy lively music and savor locally-sustained food for lunch,
creating a vibrant and inclusive atmosphere. - Community Engagement: Interact with first responders in workshop
demonstrations and sign up for additional Community Emergency Response Training
(CERT) to enhance community preparedness. - Environmental Advocacy: Explore the critical need for climate change mitigation
and proactive protective measures, addressing Newark’s vulnerability to severe
weather incidents.
