Description:
Presenter: Neil Muscatiello, NYS Department of Health

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Building Resilience Against Climate Effects (BRACE) framework is a five-step process that allows health officials to develop strategies and programs to help communities prepare for the health effects of climate change. The framework allows health officials to more effectively anticipate, prepare for, and respond to a range of climate sensitive health impacts – the negative impacts of which are disproportionately experience by lower income communities.
Step 1: Anticipate Climate Impacts and Assessing Vulnerabilities
Step 2: Project the Disease Burden
Step 3: Assess Public Health Interventions
Step 4: Develop and Implement a Climate and Health Adaptation Plan
Step 5: Evaluate Impact and Improve Quality of Activities
Learn how BRACE’s work on resilience against climate change impacts the communities you serve, including. The webinar will provide:

• An overview of the development of a heat vulnerability index, which identifies areas of the state where there may be a larger population that is vulnerable to extreme heat;
• A look at a NASA-funded project with the National Weather Service that examines associations between heat and health;
• Information about NYS Department of Health’s partnership with the NYS Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance to help promote the Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP) cooling assistance program for vulnerable New Yorkers.
