Cazenovia Earth Week is 21 community groups coming together to celebrate the wonderful and beautiful place where we live, to educate ourselves about what we have, and taking actions here in our homes, neighborhoods and community to do our part to save our planet.
This year we celebrating trees for their beauty, the incredibly valuable role they play in the environment, and the value their wood contributes in our daily lives.
Today we are still living in the shadows of the pandemic. Every person and community have had to face this same struggle. Honoring this 51tst Earth Day it is more important than ever, to enjoy, work hard, and celebrate together taking care of this, our planet.

Library Book Display
Library will curate a display of books for all ages about trees and our environment. Included in the display will be tree themed bookmarks.
The 220 Tree Project – Stone Quarry Hill Art Park
The 220 Trees Project is an experiential installation to merge art and nature to teach and learn about carbon sequestration and climate change. For Earth Day celebrations we will be expanding the planting and replacing the trees that were damaged during the wither. This effort is being taken on by volunteers from UCAN, Cazenovia College Environmental Club and other local groups. Story Stroll: “A Tree is Nice”
Beginning April 19 the Library will have a story stroll “A Tree is Nice” by Janice May Udry along the sidewalk from the parking lot.
Tree Distribution in partnership with Neighborhood Forest
Families who pre registered for trees can pick up their saplings at the Library beginning April 23rd.
Poetry Contest – Find your inspiration in Trees!
During April, National Poetry Month, the Cazenovia Preservation Foundation, the Friends of the Cazenovia Public Library and local poet, Eric Evans, will be accepting submissions of poetry from members of the community on the theme “Trees”. All poems will be published on the CPF website and selected poems will be displayed on interpretive signage along the CPF Gorge Trail as part of the “Poetry on the Gorge Trail” exhibit beginning in May. Students are encouraged to participate. Prizes in each category: Grades K-4, Grades 5-8, Grades 9-12 and adult. Deadline: April 22, 2021.

Annual Chittenango Creek Clean Up
In celebration of the 51st anniversary of Earth Day, the Annual Chittenango Creek Clean-Up will be starting at the Buyea’s Hardware parking lot in Cazenovia and ending at approximately 12:00 p.m. Please arrive and remain masked until we disperse in small groups to start the actual clean-up.
- Trash bags will be provided and gloves available to borrow.
- Volunteers should wear older clothes and boots.
- Volunteers of all ages are welcome, but minors must be accompanied by an adult.
This event is being sponsored by Cazenovia College’s Environmental Club, Fishing Club, Alpha Lambda Delta First Year Honor Society, Alpha Phi Omega National Community Service Fraternity, Madison County Chapter of Trout Unlimited, Scout Troop 18, and Cazenovia Preservation Foundation.
The Chittenango Creek Clean-Up has been an annual event since the early 2000s. Thanks to the help of many college students and community members, the event results in about two pick-up loads of trash removed from the creek and its surrounding banks.

Guided Tour of Forest Stone Quarry Hill Art Park
Senior Forester Paul Romanenko of the NYS DEC will lead a guided walk/talk of the forest at Stone Quarry Hill Art Park. Paul specializes in private land services and is currently creating a forest management plan for Stone Quarry. Learn about trees, forest stewardship, and DEC management plans. Arbor Day Celebration Cazenovia Village Tree Commission
Cazenovia Village Tree Commission will host the annual Arbor Day celebration in front of the Presbyterian Church. The event will be a planting of a young evergreen along with the Arbor Day Proclamation.

Chasing Ice & Talk :An Emmy award-winning documentary film released in 2012, describes how photographer James Balog documented polar and glacial ice loss through the Extreme Ice Survey to raise awareness about climate change.
Following the film screening, Dr. Amy Leventer, a Colgate University professor and micro paleontologist specializing in paleoclimatic reconstructions of the Antarctic, will consider the current understanding of climate data trends, 10 years after the culmination of the filming and production of Chasing Ice, and the ways in which we can start planning now to mitigate the effects of climate change. N.Y. State Senator Rachel May– Will talk about Sustainable energy and climate plans in NY State and How these plans impact Madison County and the Greater Cazenovia Area.

Madison County’s Recycling Coordinator Kristin Welch will talk about what types of plastics are actually recyclable, special recycling programs for hard to recycle materials, how you can rethink waste in your community and more. Don’t forget to bring your recycling questions!

Our town…Caring for our lakes and watersheds
Exploring environmental projects for improving and protecting water quality in the towns of Cazenovia and Nelson. Jim Cunningham is the Nelson Town Supervisor and serves on the Madison County Soil and Water Conservation Board of Directors. He will speak from his 45 years of experience working to implement local water quality projects and his water purification consulting experience.

Climate Change, Global Challenge, and Local Response. Andy Pattison- Environmental Studies, Colgate University, will speak on sustainability and climate action planning, politics and policy, the role of science and technical information in the policy process issues of urban environmental justice and social equity.
