Task Force Goal: Unlock energy storage for commercial and multifamily uses
To date most energy storage installed in NYC has been between 1-5MW. However, significant land use competition and a limitation in the number of vacant lots will make it challenging to meet long-term deployment goals with large energy storage systems alone. We will need significant quantities of smaller energy storage systems as well, better integrated into the urban landscape, particularly to support load management as we electrify. As LL97 drives up demand for building-integrated energy storage, and Zoning for Carbon Neutral allows more as-of-right systems, the time is ripe for NYC to unlock energy storage for commercial and multifamily uses.
This Task Force aims to host a half-day conference in February 2025 that brings together policymakers, AHJs, industry representatives, and property managers to both streamline permitting pathways and establish clear financial rationale for deployment, jumpstarting development in this market sector.

Event Details
Our annual lookback at the past year in energy storage covers advances in the U.S. market including policy and regulatory updates, market rules and FERC compliance, and developments in technology and markets. This year, we’re also looking ahead to 2025, as presenters share their thoughts on what the changing landscape might bring. This webinar features presentations by Will McNamara, Grid Energy Storage Policy Analyst for Sandia National Laboratories, Joan White, Director of Storage and Interconnection Policy at the Solar Energy Industries Association, Jim Greenberger, Executive Director of NAATBatt International, and Darleen DeRosa, Senior Vice President of Policy & Regulatory Affairs at Stem, Inc. Dr. Imre Gyuk, Director of Energy Storage Research at U.S. DOE Office of Electricity, will provide an introduction to the topic. Clean Energy States Alliance Senior Project Director Todd Olinsky-Paul will host and moderate the discussion. This webinar is a presentation of the Energy Storage Technology Advancement Partnership (ESTAP). ESTAP is a federal-state funding and information sharing project that aims to accelerate the deployment of electrical energy storage technologies in the U.S. ESTAP is funded by the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Electricity, managed by Sandia National Laboratories, and administered by the Clean Energy States Alliance.
