Event Details
This 8-hour training is targeted toward building officials, beyond code program administrators, and others who are tasked with the approval of energy modeling submittals for performance-based compliance, as well as energy modelers for performing internal quality control. It covers strategies for performing effective and efficient reviews of modeling-based submittals including identifying the impactful building systems and components to help prioritize the review effort and the key review steps including the following:
-
checking submittals for completeness;
-
confirming that building systems and components shown in the Compliance Form reflect design documents;
-
validating that the configuration of the baseline (budget) design model is established correctly based on the applicable rules of ASHRAE 90.1 Section 11 or Appendix G;
-
establishing that, based on the simulation reports, the baseline (budget) and proposed designs were modeled as described in the Compliance Form;
-
and that the compliance outcome was established correctly based on the energy modeling results.
The training demonstrates how to effectively use the DOE/PNNL Compliance Form to perform submittal reviews and helps design teams and modelers establish internal quality control procedures to reduce the number of review iterations when submitting to above code programs or for code compliance.
The training includes examples based upon real life projects to illustrate how to apply review strategies and steps described in the DOE/PNNL Submittal Review Manual, use simulation reports to review energy models, and to communicate review comments to modelers and design teams. The training will also cover the additional review checks for projects following the NY Stretch Energy 2020.
Target Audience
Code officials, reviewers of modeling-based submittals for code compliance and beyond code programs, energy modelers, members of design teams.
Prerequisites
-
Background in mechanical engineering, architectural engineering or architecture and/or other building science related fields.

Event Details
The Resilient Solar Initiative, powered by Solar One and funded by National Oceanic and Atmospheric
Administration (NOAA), is a high school internship program in partnership with the City of Newark’s
Office of Sustainability. Its mission is to develop eight mobile solar chargers deployed to city-wide
community hubs for emergency preparedness. These chargers provide supplemental electricity during
emergencies, aiding Newark residents with medical devices and electronics.
To raise awareness of solar power’s importance, the initiative hosts eight Community Engagement
Showcase “pop-up” events. These free events educate Newark students, families, and businesses on
solar power’s role in emergency services. Events feature:
- Educational Activities: Engage with STEM-focused activities and learn about green
energy careers, fostering positive climate action in our community. - Live Demonstrations: Witness training demonstrations and the deployment of a
solar-energy powered emergency battery station, showcasing the practical
applications of sustainable technology. - Cultural Elements: Enjoy lively music and savor locally-sustained food for lunch,
creating a vibrant and inclusive atmosphere. - Community Engagement: Interact with first responders in workshop
demonstrations and sign up for additional Community Emergency Response Training
(CERT) to enhance community preparedness. - Environmental Advocacy: Explore the critical need for climate change mitigation
and proactive protective measures, addressing Newark’s vulnerability to severe
weather incidents.

Training Description
The training illustrates the use of energy modeling following the framework of ASHRAE Standard 209 – Computer Simulation Aided Design throughout design development, including the schematic design, construction document, and compliance documentation phases. It focuses on design decisions made at different stages of design that may lead to projects failing to comply with code using the performance path, such as envelope design not meeting the envelope backstop, ventilation rates exceeding minimum code requirements, inefficient ventilation system design, and the impact of space and service water heating fuel source on compliance. The training includes examples of designs that may not meet code due to recent changes to Standard 90.1 and additional requirements in 2020 NYStretch Energy and 2020 NYC ECCC.
Target Audience
Energy modelers, design professionals.
Prerequisites
-
Two years of experience in commercial or multifamily building design, operation, maintenance, energy code enforcement, or related fields, or equivalent education.
-
Completion of 110: Performance-based Compliance with ASHRAE Standard 90.1 or equivalent work experience.
Learning Objectives
-
Name the common design decisions made during the schematic and design development stages that have a high impact on performance-based compliance outcomes.
-
Name the new impactful rules in NYS ECCC and NY Stretch that limit trade-off opportunities on projects following the performance paths.
-
Provide examples of designs decisions that result in performance penalties when using performance-based compliance.
-
Provide examples of designs decisions that result in performance credits when using performance-based compliance.
