Morning Session:
Bill Caplan, Assoc AIA, engineer, innovator and author of “THWART CLIMATE CHANGE NOW: Reducing Embodied Carbon Brick by Brick” will show us that reducing embodied carbon is the next crucial tool in the architect’s power to fight back against climate change.
Ken Levenson, Executive Director of the Passive House Network, will help you understand how the Passive House movement offers architects and owners a revolutionary, holistic way to create homes that are energy efficient, comfortable, and affordable.
Christina Griffin, AIA, LEED AP APB+C, CPHC, Principal of CGA Studio, who has actively promoted sustainable design through her civic engagement and collaboration within the design and construction community, will show us how to embrace building science to design low-carbon environments.
Afternoon Session:
Tour of the Cary Institute: It was initially designed in 1978 by Malcom Wells, the founder of the green building movement. In 2022, a renovation and expansion designed by Bruce Becker was completed, with LEED Platinum, Living Building Future Zero Carbon, Zero Energy, and Core Green certification.
Bruce Becker, FAIA, will show you how his firm designs and develops projects that are social and environmental game-changers: restoring underutilized historic buildings and transforming urban sites to enrich and revitalize communities. He will share examples of his projects including the renovation of and addition to the Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies, and net zero adaptive re-use of existing icons such as the Hotel Marcel in New Haven.
Dr. Sharon Sutton, FAIA, Distinguished visiting professor of Architecture, Parsons School of Design, educator, author, and citizen architect with worldwide reach who has shifted the profession of architecture toward a more equitable, diverse, and inclusive future. She will share her work on community-based participatory research and design with a special emphasis on low-income and minority youth and other disenfranchised populations.
Illya Azaroff, FAIA, National AIA President Elect 2025, COP 28 Delegation Chair. Professor in practice at New York City College of Technology (CUNY) and founding principal of +LAB architect PLLC, will talk about his mission to build resilient capacity in response to climate change and natural disasters, and design a sustainable, regenerative future while giving underserved communities greater voice and visibility.

The 2024 American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) Decarbonization Conference will be an information and idea exchange between stakeholders in the built environment industry concerning the timely and important topic of reducing carbon emissions from existing buildings in cold climates. The focus for the conference will be replicable decarbonization technical solutions for existing large and tall buildings, where the density of construction makes this sector one of the most difficult to decarbonize. The conference will highlight substantial global activities and research driving decarbonization demonstrations, and technical and financial case studies for large building solutions.

Event Details
NYATEP (New York Association of Training and Employment Professionals) & NYSEDC (New York State Economic Development Council) have worked together to improve workforce and economic development for all New Yorkers. Together, we’ve broken down the silos between the local workforce and economic development ecosystems, and defined that investing in people, developing infrastructure, and creating vibrant communities will naturally lead to economic development opportunities and the industries of the future. As the state’s workforce and economic development leaders, we are interested in hearing your collective vision for the opportunities ahead, how the state agencies will be collaborating, and what we can do in the present to prepare for the future.
The Conference Registration has moved to a waitlist. If you would like to be added to the waitlist, please contact Adrienne at aceneviva@nyatep.org.

Who Attends
BuildingEnergy NYC attendees are leaders and emerging professionals from across the Northeast, committed to developing a more sustainable, healthy, and resilient built environment. They represent a wide range of industries, backgrounds, and levels of experience.
2024 Conference Theme: Beyond Compliance
The urgency of climate change demands bold action, innovation, and transformative leadership. In recent years, New York and the Northeast have led the country through groundbreaking changes to building codes, energy codes, and financial incentives to support climate adaptation across all sectors. Today, we have an opportunity to push our industry to achieve and even exceed these ambitious mandates. The 2024 BuildingEnergy NYC conference will be a chance to explore both the risks and rewards of moving Beyond Compliance.
At this year’s conference, we challenge you to share your experiences, successes, and setbacks with projects and programs that exceed the bare minimum and innovate on existing practices. We need to be thinking beyond compliance both in terms of scope (What else?) and time (What next?). This holistic approach encompasses the intersections of health, efficiency, resilience, and financial benefits, and prioritizes the needs of people while addressing the climate crisis.

Event Details
Join New York’s solar and storage industry at the Albany Capital Center for the 2024 NY Solar Summit, a conference and trade show dedicated to advancing rapid solar + storage deployment throughout the State.
With 800 attendees at our most recent conference, the 2024 NY Solar Summit will bring together clean energy leaders from the private and public sectors for energizing sessions focusing on accelerating New York’s vibrant rooftop and community solar markets, the expanding role of energy storage, and ensuring low-income New Yorkers benefit from clean energy investments. Expert panelists and speakers will discuss barriers to progress as well as the policies, programs and business models we need to scale up distributed solar + storage in every corner of New York. The event will provide attendees with ample learning and networking opportunities, and the trade show will feature exhibitors from leading clean energy companies, a series of small workshops, and much more.
New York is rapidly deploying distributed solar at-scale, making it an ideal resource to help close the gap on the state’s clean energy commitments. Scaling up rooftop and community solar presents an immense opportunity for New York businesses, workers and communities. However, accelerating deployment is easier said than done; as New York’s distributed solar + storage market matures, the industry faces a new set of challenges, including: dwindling hosting capacity and rising interconnection costs; restrictive local laws and permitting barriers; and challenging project economics due to rising costs and declining incentives and compensation. Policy interventions, business innovation, and creative program design are all needed to overcome these barriers and drive continued progress. Join 800+ leaders from the public and private sector for networking, presentations and focused conversations about the challenges and opportunities in New York’s nation-leading distributed solar + storage market.
