Last week, the Rules, Enactments and Intergovernmental Relations Committee pushed through a scheduled vote to support the Danskammer fracked-gas power plant. Much of their language was gleaned from the Danskammer LLC prospectus, and they even had Danskammer legal counsel sitting at the table! A motion to table the vote on the resolution until all sides had been heard was dismissed.

The Orange County Legislature will vote on a resolution to support the new Danskammer power plant in Newburgh on October 3rd – without hearing both sides of the question. These are the same tactics they used to support the notorious CPV power plant, for which people are now doing time for corruption. WHAT YOU CAN DO:
Show up for Public Comments— You have a right to use your 3 minutes to tell them what you think:

It’s in the wrong place— flooded during Super Storm Sandy

It’s the wrong time—NY is committed to clean energy under the recently-passed Climate & Communities Protection Act

It’s a step backward—increased industrialization of the riverfront will adversely affect tourism and investment in the region

It will pollute the air— it will produce 10 times more annual emissions than the current plant, as they will be moving from operating 4-7 hours per week to full-time operations of 140-168 hours per week.

Cumulative health effects for NBNY — in a population which has been drinking PFOS polluted water for generations, an additional pollution load may lead to serious illness.

We don’t need it—NYISO, our grid operator, does not include this plant as necessary for power in New York.

Better choices exist—sustainable energy projects offer comparable jobs. Nationwide, green energy jobs outstrip fossil fuel jobs 5:1.
